The Michigan School Vocal Music Association ("MSVMA") offers vocal Solo and Ensemble ("S&E") Festival for choral students.  This is an excellent opportunity for HSMA students to grow as musicians.  Please see our calendar for S&E dates and deadlines.  

 Senior High District Solo and Ensemble Festival

Eligibility:

  • All vocalists in grades 9-12
  • All participants, except accompanists, must be registered HSMA students and must be members of Bel Canto Chorale or Chancel Choir.

Junior High District Solo and Ensemble Festival

Eligibility:

  • All vocalists in grades 7 and 8 grade may participate and receive a rating as soloists or as members of ensembles
  • Students in 6th grade or in 9th grade may not participate as soloists.
  • Student s in 6th grade may participate and receive a rating only in ensembles that include 7th and 8th grade students.
  • Students in grades 7, 8, and 9 may participate in ensembles for ratings or comments only.
  • All participants, except accompanists, must be registered HSMA students and must be members of Bel Canto Chorale or Chancel Choir.

Senior High State Solo and Ensemble Festival

Eligibility

  • Vocalists in grades 9-2
  • The event earned a I (“Superior”) rating at District S&E

Guidelines and rules for District Solo and Ensemble Festivals

A.     General Requirements:

1.     Each participating entry is required to sing two selections of contrasting character. Popular, show tune, vocal jazz, barbershop, or novelty selections are not to be sung. Choreography is not allowed.

2.     An original score, with measures clearly numbered, must be provided for the adjudicator.

3.     Accompaniment, if written, must be performed live (unless the piece is avant garde or 20th century music requiring electronic or taped accompaniment as part of the composer’s compositional and performance intent).

4.     Accompanists must have available an original copy of the music (in addition to the judge’s score). Copies may be made to facilitate page turns.

5.     Music from CD ROM anthologies on the required list may be reproduced and must include the identifying logo on each page. As is current practice, no other repertoire for Solo and Ensemble Festival may be reproduced.

 

B.     Additional requirements for soloists:

1.     Soloists must choose one selection from the Approved Solo Repertoire List located on this website at Festivals => Solo and Ensemble => MSVMA S&E Festival => Approved Solo Repertoire List.

2.     Soloists may perform only one opera aria.

3.     Soloists must perform from memory.

4.     Soloists will be allotted a minimum of 10 minutes which includes entry and exit to and from the performance room, as well as time for oral comments from the adjudicator.

 

C.    Additional requirement for ensembles:

1.     An ensemble can include as few as two (2) singers but not more than twenty (20) singers to be eligible for a rating.

2.     Ensembles may use scores or perform from memory.

3.     The personnel of an ensemble cannot change between selections.

4.     Ensembles will be allotted a minimum of 12 minutes which includes entry and exit to and from the performance room, as well as time for oral comments from the adjudicator.
